Huddle: Project Management + Collaboration tools = Online Workspaces

Huddle is a British company that provides online collaboration, live conferencing, online project management and document sharing on an unified package. It is 100% web-based and is available for small groups or companies of all sizes.

These are some of the features offered:

  • Discussions: Don’t ‘reply all’. Use Discussion forums to brainstorm ideas.
  • Document creation: Create and edit Word and Excel documents online.
  • Storage: Store, share and manage your files 1GB+.
  • Project alerts and notifications: Assign tasks, auto reminders and iCal integration.
  • Whiteboards: Or wiki, share ideas, comments, etc.
  • Document management: Automated versioning, audit trails and approval workflows.
  • Custom branding: Customise your dashboard, homepage, emails, own URL.
  • Notifications: Via dashboard, email, and RSS.
  • Security: 128 bit SSL, control over who can see and read documents.

The price plans vary from USD $20 to USD $98 per month, with main differences on the number of workspaces (5-20) and the storage available (2.5Gb-20Gb). There is also an enterprise version and a free account. Since the free option only allow 1 workspace, I'm assuming its purpose is to offer a way for someone on the team to evaluate the service before making a decision. Other than that, I don't see why one would collaborate with oneself. ;-)

Huddle also offers an interesting integration with LinkedIn providing an application for you to collaborate with your LinkedIn contacts.

PhotoFunia: add special effects to your photos in seconds

PhotoFunia is an online image editor that, as the name suggest, provides a very fun experience.

The process couldn't be simpler: you pick one of the many interesting effects they offer, upload a photo and... done! In a couple of seconds you have the photo ready for download.

They also have interesting partnerships: if you click on "Publish", PhotoFunia offers an integration with TinyPic, where they automaticaly host your photo and give you link to publish wherever you want. Another interesting option is "Send as Postcard", where you can send a "real" postcard to any country trough Touchnote, for USD $3.00.

PhotoFunia is free. Try it here and have fun.

Panda Cloud Antivirus: the first web-based consumer antivirus

Panda Security announced today the first consumer antivirus to run in "the cloud". The product is still in closed beta (I just signed up to be notified when a slot is avaiable for new testers), but this is what I could get from their online help page:

Reinventing the antivirus

Panda Cloud Antivirus is intelligent and has been designed to act only when necessary. It's so light, you won't notice it's there, even if you are playing or using the Internet...

The fastest in detecting new viruses

Our network of Collective Intelligence servers identifies and processes viruses automatically in a fraction of the time required by laboratory technicians.

Designed with you in mind

Now you can forget about tiresome antivirus products with incessant notifications and difficult questions. Panda Cloud Antivirus works for you without annoying you.

Updates are history

The real key to Panda Cloud Antivirus is in the Collective Intelligence servers. That's why you'll always have maximum detection capacity without relying on traditional updates.

Detects more than anyone else

The Panda servers have a database of millions of viruses allowing Panda Cloud Antivirus to detect the multitude of threats that appear every day.

The community is key

Benefit from a network of users who automatically share information about viruses detected on their computers, ensuring that solutions travel around the world in just a few seconds.

I specially found intriguing the concept behind what they called "Collective Intelligence" that "allows mega-detection capacity while reducing resource consumption" through the user's community.

Panda will be offered for free, and I'm curious to follow how the market will react to this new launch and also how competition will counter-attack. It definetly looks like a paradigm shift on the lucrative antivirus industry.

Sign-up for the beta test here.

Zoho Mobile gets significant improvements

The multi-web-applications company Zoho announced today important improvements on its mobile offering. It is making available 6 of their apps (Mail, Calendar, Writer, Sheet, Show and Creator) to be accessed through the most important mobile platforms (iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile & Symbian - S60).

I have tried using some of the products on my iPod Touch and my BlackBerry. As expected, the iPod provided a good experience for viewing a spreadsheet, but doing the same thing on the BlackBerry retuns a bunch of non-formated texts (which is a similar result provided by Google Spreadsheets, by the way).

Penzu: online private journal that emulates a paper-like experience

Penzu is a fun application that lets you create an online journal that resembles a "real" paper journal. You can add as many images as you want, share selected texts with other people and use it for a variety of reasons. Below I list the reasons why Penzu can be better than a traditional paper-bound journal (as listed on their website):

Never Lost or Stolen: Keeping your journal with Penzu means it can never be stolen or lost. You don’t have to worry about leaving your diary or journal behind, or someone stealing it from your hiding place. With Penzu your most precious memories are safe!

Access Anywhere: Have you been away from your diary and wanted to record something at that moment? Penzu is accessible from any computer in the world - take your journal with you wherever you go!

Sharing is Easy: Have you every wanted to share just one page of your diary with someone? Now you can. Share your entries via email to family and friends. If you want, you can remain anonymous and the recipient will not know it was you sending the message!

Saving is a Thing of The Past: Similar to writing on paper, as you type an entry, it saves automatically! Your thoughts are saved as you go. Have a thought that you need to get out right away? You can start writing on the pad even without being logged in! And once you log in, your entry will be saved to your account.

Filtered Search: If you find yourself constantly leafing through your journal to find a specific entry, your troubles end here. Penzu allows you to easily search your entries and then sort them by Name, Date Created, Size, Locked, or Shared. You can find past entries in seconds and even edit them if need be!

Penzu is free and you can try it here.

Taskbarn: free web project management and colaboration tool

Taskbarn is a free tool where you can track your projects through a clean and easy to use interface. It allows you to colaborate with co-workers and easily share progress with clients through RSS feeds. You can upload up to 100MB of files per project, and an API is avalilable for those who want to build applications on top of Taskbarn.

According to the website:

  • Update your status in "the feed" to keep stakeholders happy
  • Tired of sorting through emails? Use Taskbarn's threaded messaging system
  • Add, track, and assign tasks to project members
  • Organize all project tasks in a TODO list.
  • Communicate with project members through private messages and the project feed.
  • Share files, web links, and other assets.
  • Invite clients, colleagues, and friends to collaborate with you on your project.
  • Access your projects from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Each project has its own unique ".taskbarn.com" address and private website.

I created an account and the setup and initial usage were really a snap. Two things I am curious about taskbarn: 1) Since it is 100% free, what is their business model? I haven't seen advertisement on the tool. Yet. 2) Apparently the service just changed its name. Look on the image above and you'll see that itwas apparently called taskfeed, which is indeed a nicer name. What might have happened?

Try Taskbarn here.

Ta-da list: minimalist, fast and easy to use to-do lists

From 37signals, the creators of Ruby on Rails and many other great collaboration web apps, Ta-da list is a very simple but effective tool for you to manage your to-do lists.

I use Ta-da for several years, and the software never had an update. The reason? It doesn't need one. It does exatly the necessary for its purpose. It is extremely simple to set-up and manage, and doesn't bring complicated fancy features. In this case, less is more.

If you are looking for a robust to-do list software to handle projects or implement GTD, I suggest you use Toodledo or Remember the Milk.

With Ta-da, you can create different lists, share them with whoever you want and also subscribe via RSS feeds. It works well in most browsers and also on mobile phones (including Windows Mobile and the iPhone).

Create your free account here.
